Grounded sheet: what it is, how it works and how to choose one

Grounded sheet is the plain name for a grounding or earthing sheet: a conductive fabric connected to the earth pin of a socket.

Why does the grounded sheet have so many names?

Direct answer: because every sales channel translates it into its own vocabulary: general retail calls it "earthed" (an electrician's word), EMF wellness shops "earth-connected" (a nod to the socket), foreign brands with localised websites "grounded", and the biohacking niche "grounding" or "earthing". It's the same product in all four cases.

If you've come across this piece of bedding in very different kinds of shop, that's no coincidence. In Spain, a general DIY retailer such as Leroy Merlin sells it as «Sábanas de Puesta a Tierra» — literally "earthed sheets" — using the same vocabulary it would use for an installation cable. A shop specialising in electromagnetic protection will list it as an "earthing or grounding sheet, for earth connection". A foreign brand with a localised website will call it an "earth-connected sheet", and in Spanish-speaking markets (including some shops in Mexico and Colombia) you'll also see «sábana de conexión a tierra» or «sábana con toma de tierra». And a biohacking blog will simply talk about a "grounding sheet", borrowing the niche's own term.

How does an earthing sheet work, part by part?

Direct answer: a grounded sheet has conductive thread woven into the fabric, a snap button that connects it to a cable with a safety resistor, and an adapter that engages only the socket's earth pin. Without a socket with a working earth, the circuit stays open and the sheet doesn't conduct.

1. The conductive fabric: conductive thread is woven in a grid across the whole contact surface, on a cotton base. Vitality uses 5% silver thread (10% variant available).

3. The cable with a safety resistor: it links the snap button to the adapter, and its built-in resistor limits the current that could reach the fabric if the socket were faulty.
4. The plug adapter: it uses only the Schuko's earth pin; by design, it doesn't connect to the home's live poles. If the socket's earth had a fault, the cable's resistor limits the current.

With those parts in place and a socket with a real earth, the sheet sits at the same electrical potential as the rest of the building's installation; without a working earth, the circuit stays open and there's no connection, however well the other parts are put together. On the underlying physics: an electrical engineering team from outside the industry, Chamberlin et al. (2014), measured the actual current between a person and the earth connection: in the order of nanoamps, a current the authors themselves describe as minuscule (DOI 10.1016/j.jcm.2014.10.001). There's no mains current: just a tiny potential-equalising current.

What isn't an earth-connected sheet?

Direct answer: it isn't an electric blanket (it doesn't heat up or carry mains current), it isn't an electromagnetic shielding fabric (it doesn't block or attenuate radio-frequency waves: that's another product category) and it doesn't put mains current into your body. Its only function is to connect your skin to earth potential while you're touching it.

The confusion with electric blankets is understandable, since both are bedding with a cable running to a socket. But a grounded sheet has no heating element and no temperature control, and its cable isn't connected to the live poles, only to the earth pin; if the socket develops a fault, the safety resistor limits the current that could reach the fabric. The confusion with "anti-radiation" or electromagnetic shielding fabric also comes up often, because some EMF shops sell both products side by side. They're different categories: a shielding fabric is designed to attenuate electromagnetic fields in the environment, whereas a grounded sheet is designed to conduct earth potential to your skin.

Is a grounded sheet safe? (the essentials)

Direct answer: the resistor built into the cable limits the current that could reach the fabric if the socket had an electrical fault; it doesn't eliminate it, it limits it. How to choose a grounded sheet: what to check before you buy

Direct answer: before buying, check six aspects of the product, not just the price: the conductive thread's material, the declared percentage and the documents behind it, the cable's safety resistor, whether testers are included, the right size and format for your bed, and clear washing instructions. Each one determines whether you'll actually be able to use it and check that it works.

1. Conductive thread material. Silver and stainless steel are the two usual materials in the industry. Silver, as a material, conducts far better from the first use: according to standard electrical conductivity values, it's around ~63×10⁶ S/m versus ~1.4×10⁶ S/m for 316L stainless steel — figures for the material itself, not for the finished fabric. 2. Declared percentage, and whether a document backs it up. A silver percentage (or one for any other conductive material) without a spec sheet to go with it is a figure you can't verify. We don't compare other brands' percentages here: we simply point out that if a listing doesn't state the percentage or reference a spec sheet, that's a reasonable warning sign.
3. Cable with a declared safety resistor. It should appear on the product spec sheet, with its approximate value, and it should be clear whether it's the manufacturer's own measurement or a third-party certification — they're different things, and the shop shouldn't blur them.
4. Testers included. Ideally two: one to check that the socket has a working earth, and another to check the electrical continuity of the fabric itself. Without them, you have no easy way of knowing whether what you've bought actually conducts.
5. The right size and format. Grounded fitted sheets usually come in single (for 90 cm beds) or double (for 135-150 cm beds). It also matters that the design gives you real contact with your skin while you sleep, not just a decorative border with conductive thread.
6. Clear washing instructions. Conductive thread can degrade if washed incorrectly; a serious spec sheet should explain, at the very least, whether it's machine-washable, at what temperature and which products to avoid.

How do you wash it so it keeps conducting?

Direct answer: cold, or at 30 °C at most, with no fabric softener or bleach, and air-dried: those are the basic rules. Fabric softener leaves a film on the conductive thread that is the most common cause of conductivity loss over time; very hot water can also damage it.

The limits of the evidence: what has been measured and what hasn't

Direct answer: if you're wondering whether a grounded sheet works, the honest approach is to separate what's been measured from what's been promised. Several small studies have measured night-time cortisol, the body's electrical potential or physiological parameters — never on this particular sheet — with small samples and no large-scale blinded design: the evidence is preliminary and no study allows results to be promised.

Ghaly and Teplitz (2004) measured night-time cortisol levels and what participants reported about their sleep, pain and stress, in 12 people sleeping grounded compared with their own baseline. It's an exploratory study, without a blinded control group (Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, DOI 10.1089/acm.2004.10.767).

Sokal and Sokal (2012) measured the electrical potential of the human body before and after grounding it in a small group of subjects, and recorded a drop of around 200 mV; it's an electrical measurement, not a health outcome, and it was carried out with few participants (Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, DOI 10.1089/acm.2010.0683).

Chevalier et al. (2012) published a narrative review bringing together several earlier studies on grounding and proposing electron transfer from the Earth's surface as a physiological mechanism; its evidence is preliminary, not a settled conclusion (Journal of Environmental and Public Health, DOI 10.1155/2012/291541).

Müller et al. (2019) designed a more careful study, with grounded sleep after intense eccentric muscle exercise, and found no clear effects on most of the variables measured (Frontiers in Physiology, DOI 10.3389/fphys.2019.00035) — a result just as worth mentioning as the others.
